Throughout time, humans have created and used musical and percussion instruments to instill rhythm and accept tone into the body for energetic boost, spiritual connection, or body healing.
Primal humans crafted their instruments to produce the best qualities of sound which they used in ceremonies or rituals, as well as for personal healing. Before the age of metals, musical instruments were handcrafted with clay, wood or sticks, rocks, gourds, animal bones, animal hides, hoofs, horns, and shells. Our ancestors created rattles, flutes and other wind instruments, stringed instruments, and percussion instruments. Many of these ancient sounds can only be produced using the original natural materials; but some of those sound have been replicated using modern versions of the ancient designs. And sometimes, digital or electronic musicians can produce identically-sounding replacements for the ancient, manual sounds. The only difference is that the purity of the sound waves is not the same when using electronic music. The human sound waves and sound waves produced by natural materials are far more beneficial in healing the body.
There is wide appeal for sound workers to find and use traditional sound instruments in their healing work for two important reasons. Natural sound is the most healing and penetrating sound for the human body; and the therapist working with sound for their clients is also exposed to those same sounds during the treatments. For those two reasons, healing sound must be easily assimilated by All bodies with equal positive results. In all ways, the healer is healed while healing another. Only natural instruments can make this happen.
Electronic compositions introduce unnatural sound waves and static into the human body. They are not compatible with the natural rhythm of the heart and organs, even though the sound produced can be enjoyable and exciting, soothing, or transformative. Electronic music does not produce sound waves that physically move air around the body. Air carries the sound-print of a natural instrument or voice and is better received by the body. A drumbeat on an electronic drum track is exciting to hear, but the movement of air produced by a set of speakers is not the same as the vibrations produced by a real drum beating in the room. In-person drum beats cannot be duplicated on a recording. The vibrations released while flutes or horns are being played can never be replicated on an electronic recording. For this reason, sound healers still use real drums and primitive instruments for healing sessions. There is beauty and elegance in that regard. No wires, speakers, computers.
Healing with Rattles
The sound of a rattle helps to break up stagnant energy within the body. Sit quietly and shake a rattle. The repetitious sound will help clear the mind and open a portal to different realities. Shamans and other indigenous sound healers make rattles using materials that possess power for spirit work using animal claws, seeds and dried plant material. A healer’s rattle holds great power; as a result some sound workers keep their rattles in special medicine bags when not in use. It also helps to keep the rattle from attracting other energies from around it.
Some mystics use the rattle to dispel illness and disease, while others use it in ritual and celebration. The rattle can also be used for grounding or setting a rhythm for singing or chanting.
Uses for Rattles
The pure sound of a rattle helps the sound worker go into a trance state and connect with the Sound Spirits. The Sound Spirits show the healer how to help those in need.
Some mystics use the rattle to dispel illness and disease, while others use it in ritual and celebration. The rattle can also be used for meditation.
Mystics and Shamans believe the rattle possesses a life and persona of its own. When the rattle is played, it awakens the spirit within the instrument and assists the healer in communicating with spirit guides and realms.
A rattle is perfect for all these purposes. Its sound has the benefit of not travelling too far so it won’t disturb your neighbors.
Use it for:
– Invocation or Calling of the Spirits
– Space Clearing (breaking up and clearing away any unwanted energies)
– Self-Healing or Healing for another
– Aura Repatterning (clearing and releasing old patterns)
– Meditation and Journeying
– Grounding
– For Divination
Use rattles at the beginning of ceremonies and rituals to ensure that there is no negativity in the place where they are happening.
When Metal Was Discovered – Ringing tones developed
The Age of Metals brought many musical instruments into creation. Metals could hold a near constant stability of a harmonic tone; and the notes produced would nearly always be the same. Music notes produced by metal bells, bowls, xylophone keys, and other metal resonators will ring true upon entering the body as a pure standing wave with long resonance and penetrating depth. A metal string being struck by keys as on a piano or harp, or plucking like on a guitar carries long-lasting resonance and sound energy into the body. This is why many sound therapists use Tibetan Singing Bowls, guitars, or harps today. A piano resonance is probably the most soothing of all complex instruments. It is because metal “rings” with beauty and stability. Metal flutes and pipes have a different resonance because of the metal than wooden or reed instruments. Both are beneficial, but very different in the body. Sound workers use both for different reasons.
Singing Bowls – The Ultimate Sound Healing Tools
The first metal singing bowls were introduced during the time of the Buddha Shakyamuni (560 – 480 B.C.). The resonance is unparalleled and can address many types of energy like blockages in the physical body. Because authentic Tibetan Bowls use 7 major metals in the process, (very few are available today), the ability for sound to resonate or ring true is enhanced by each metal in the blend. If the bowl is authentically created, those sound waves penetrate deeper and last longer in the body. Today, other metal blends are used to make singing bowls. The sounds are pure and the resonance is stable. They compare favorably with ancient metal bowls except for one important difference. When a sound worker uses the old metal bowls vs. new metal, they have the vibrational benefit of 7 ringing metals instead of a singular vibration of a singular metal. Since the old bowls are no longer being crafted, contemporary sound healers are using the new metal bowls. They are also opting to use Crystal Singing Bowls, which are solid piece of manufactured, cultured, silicon crystal ground into the bowl shape by laser cutters. The sound waves are different between metal and crystal, but both do a great job of sending healing waves of sound into the body.
The sound of the rattle helps the sound worker go into a trance state and connect with the Sound Spirits. The Sound Spirits show the healer how to help those in need.
Some mystics use the rattle to dispel illness and disease, while others use it in ritual and celebration. The rattle can also be used for grounding.
Most of the instruments used in the Natural Tune method of sound therapies are hand-created, percussion, resonating tools that each have a specific use in the body. Along with the natural voice, a Natural Tune Therapist can use human-powered musical instruments to release energy patterns that cause pain, emotional trauma, illness, or depression. Natural sounds are also beneficial when working with those who suffer from strokes, dementia or Alzheimer Syndrome.
